Can file sharing sites steal files off my computer?

I share a computer with other people and use file sharing sites like Mediafire. Can sites like this steal documents off my computer? And if I share the computer, can it access files that even I have no access to?

1. The short answer is no. Mediafire, in particular, requires that you upload media before it's actually shared. If it did post files without your permission, the site would be considered malicious and therefore illegal. I included a link with more information about mediafire in particular.
