How to share files from a hard drive to a new laptop?

I Just bought a SATA/IDE cable, so that I can transfer files from an old hard drive to my new computer that I just bought. I tried to transfer the files, but they tell me that I don't have permission to share files. I was wondering if anyone can give me some instructions on how to get permission to transfer files? I have important files that I need to get from this hard drive. Thanks

2. Copy your files into a flash or usb drive and transfer it into your laptop.
